1. The Order in the Universe
While the reasoning from work to author, like the evidence of fire to smoke, is known as the argument from material cause to material effect, the reasoning from material effect to material cause, like the evidence of smoke to fire, is known as 'argument a posteriori.' The latter is sounder and more free of doubt.
One of the proofs of the above-mentioned verses (Qur'an, 2:21-22) indicating the Maker's existence and unity is the 'proof of divine providence' (Delilü'l-Inâye). This proof consists of the order and regularity which pre- serves the universe and all its parts from disturbance, disharmony, dispersal, and which, taking all its particulars under order, gives it life. The source of all good things, instances of wisdom, benefits, and advantages is this order. All the verses of the Qur'an that speak of benefits and advantages proceed on this order and manifest it. Therefore, just as such order as is the source of all things good, beneficial, and useful most certainly points to the existence of an orderer; so by pointing to the orderer's purpose and wisdom, it repulses the delusion of blind chance.
O man! If your mind and view are powerless to find this elevated order and you are not capable of reaching it through inductive reasoning, that is, through general investigation, consider the universe through the sciences, which have arisen from the meeting of minds — called the conjunction of ideas — and are like the senses of humankind; read its pages so that you may see this elevated order, which leave minds in amazement.
Indeed, a science dealing with each realm of the universe has been formed or is being formed. The sciences consist of universal laws, and the universality of laws indicates the excellence of the order and its beauty. For that which lacks order cannot have universality, For example, there is a white turban on the head of every religious scholar. This statement, which may be made by reason of universality, indicates the existence of order in the scholar class, the realm of scholars. Since this is so, due to the univer-
